Be inspired by local contemporary art created from second-hand shop treasures and reused everyday materials on display at Salvage, Brisbane City Council’s Recycling Art Exhibition. The exhibition explores the creative potential of reusing and recycling household items and furniture, with an aim to inspire people to see the possibility in things that may have been thrown away. Artists found their materials in Council’s tip shops and other second-hand stores.

The Royal Queensland Show (Ekka) is Queensland’s largest annual event. Held over ten full days (11-20 August 2017), Ekka showcases life and achievements in the Sunshine State, bringing visitors from across Queensland and Australia to the heart of Brisbane. This year marks the 140th show, and more than 400,000 people are expected to come together to celebrate Queensland’s most loved annual event. The Ekka is celebrating this milestone by introducing for the first time – the half price Twilight ticket and the early children’s fireworks show at 6pm each evening. So there will be not one but two fireworks shows each night of Show!

Friday August 18 from 12pm – 9pm // South Bank Parklands, Cnr Ernest, Stanley & Grey St’s, South Bank

Express yourself, revive your wardrobe with pre-loved fashion, embrace your individual style and support the environment at this year’s pop-up Revive Fashion Festival. This one day community event returns to the Cultural Forecourt for its second year. Come and meet some of Brisbane’s most stylish and savvy fashionistas and learn how to master second-hand styling by incorporating second-hand clothes into your wardrobe. The event will be held on Friday in the lead up to National Op Shop Week and will feature local charities, retailers, students, crafters, clothes vendors and stylists to offer a fun fashion-focused program of activities, such as markets, runway shows, styling and live entertainment, as well as food from some of Brisbane’s best food trucks.

Friday August 18 thru to Saturday August 26 at 7pm // Flipside Circus Training Centre, 117 Mina Pde, Alderley

Queensland’s largest youth circus is getting ready to dazzle Brisbane audiences with their new show, The Flipside Circus Cabaret Show. The show promises a wide array of acts including trapeze, clowning, cabaret, contortion and more. The Flipside Circus Performance Troupe range in ages from 11 to 17 and come from across Brisbane’s Northside. Flipside Circus is committed to nurturing and developing Australia’s next generation of circus performers. Participants work with a regular team of trainers as well as international and local guest artists. The Flipside Circus Cabaret Show is suitable for the whole family, so come and see some of Queensland’s extraordinary young circus artists take to the stage in what promises to be a show that delights the senses.

Saturday August 19 from 9am – 11am // Cresthaven Park, 50 Banika St, Mansfield

Join in to plant street trees in your neighbourhood to help grow our urban forest and achieve our shared vision for a clean, green Brisbane. Meet your neighbours, plant your street trees and enjoy a sausage sizzle and cold drink. All participating volunteers will receive three free plants for their garden. You will also receive a pack full of sustainable living ideas and find out how to care for your own trees.

Gopio Queensland’s presents India Day Fair 2017, celebrating India’s 70 years of Independence. The event will be full of colour, culture, art, dance, food and live performances by local and international acts. Come along and take part of the festivities. Saturday August 19 from 5.30pm // Queensland Museum, Level 2, Foyer, Cnr Grey & Melbourne St’s, South Bank

Bring your sleeping bag, pillows and excitement for a wild sleepover at the Museum. Explore four levels of the Museum, including hands-on activities, torchlight tours and pop-up shows. Have tucker and then wind down with a movie before its lights out. Drift off to dream state amongst Queensland’s furry, spindly, scaly and friendly inhabitants in the Wild State gallery. On Sunday morning recharge with breakfast before some serious Sciencentre fun to get the brain buzzing! This event is for 5 – 12 years. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Adults are not permitted without a child. Adult to child ratio of 1:3 required for Museum sleepovers. Please note the program is not suited for children under five years of age.
