The Royal Queensland Show (Ekka) is Queensland's largest annual event. Held over ten full days (11-20 August 2017), Ekka showcases life and achievements in the Sunshine State, bringing visitors from across Queensland and Australia to the heart of Brisbane. This year marks the 140th show, and more than 400,000 people are expected to come together to celebrate Queensland’s most loved annual event. The Ekka is celebrating this milestone by introducing for the first time â€“ the half price Twilight ticket and the early childrenâ€™s fireworks show at 6pm each evening. So there will be not one but two fireworks shows each night of Show!

FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS

Grab the family and head to Westfield Chermside for the Festival of Lights! Each night from Thursday to Saturday, the dining precinct will transform into a hub of lighting, interactive displays and live music. Each night kicks off with a fireworks display and a live lighting show of the Urchin curated by audio-visual artist, Kit Webster. Other events include live lights shows, live music, free glow-in-the-dark face-painting, LED robot stilt walkers, digital dance-offs and loads more!

Be inspired by local contemporary art created from second-hand shop treasures and reused everyday materials on display at Salvage, Brisbane City Council’s Recycling Art Exhibition. The exhibition explores the creative potential of reusing and recycling household items and furniture, with an aim to inspire people to see the possibility in things that may have been thrown away. Artists found their materials in Council’s tip shops and other second-hand stores.

EXHIBITION // MARVEL: CREATING THE CINEMATIC UNIVERSE

Marvel: Creating the Cinematic Universe will open exclusively at the Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) from 27 May until 3 September 2017. This will be the first major Marvel exhibition in Australia and the largest ever presented in an art museum worldwide! It features more than 500 objects including 60 plus original costumes (worn by actors including Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Hopkins, Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr. and Tilda Swinton), comic books, props, spectacular set design, concept and keyframe art, clips and bespoke hands-on interactives. Legendary Marvel characters such as Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Black Widow and Hulk are profiled, as well as the Avengers, Ant-Man and the Guardians of the Galaxy. The exhibition will encompass GOMAâ€™s entire ground floor and cinema spaces.

Families can count on a fun day out with the opening of the new Mathamazing exhibition at Queensland Museumâ€™s Sciencentre. Playfully connecting maths to everyday life, the 22 interactive activities â€” designed to inspire mathematical curiosity and confidence â€” add up to a whole lot of fun. Visitors will be able to challenge their lateral thinking and topology as they untangle themselves from handcuffs in the Manacle, solve giant floor puzzles, work their way through mazes, test their reaction time, work out the mass of an unknown object, build an arch that wonâ€™t collapse, and explore fractals on a touchscreen.
