SALVAGE // RECYCLING ART EXHIBITION
Now thru to Saturday August 19 // Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Art, 420 Brunswick St, Fortitude Valley

Be inspired by local contemporary art created from second-hand shop treasures and reused everyday materials on display at Salvage, Brisbane City Council’s Recycling Art Exhibition. The exhibition explores the creative potential of reusing and recycling household items and furniture, with an aim to inspire people to see the possibility in things that may have been thrown away. Artists found their materials in Council’s tip shops and other second-hand stores.

Join in every Tuesday, during the school term, on the Turbine Platform. In this space, anything is possible. Powerkids: Little Artists at Play is a creative play workshop series for children aged 0-5 years and their parents and carers. Bring your kids along to take part in multi-art experiences led by internationally acclaimed artists from Imaginary Theatre. Each week the host artist will collaborate with the group on unique and engaging activities. From theatre and visual art to dance, music and digital media, there will be something to inspire everyone.

EXHIBITION // MARVEL: CREATING THE CINEMATIC UNIVERSE

Marvel: Creating the Cinematic Universe will open exclusively at the Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA) from 27 May until 3 September 2017. This will be the first major Marvel exhibition in Australia and the largest ever presented in an art museum worldwide! It features more than 500 objects including 60 plus original costumes (worn by actors including Chris Hemsworth, Anthony Hopkins, Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr. and Tilda Swinton), comic books, props, spectacular set design, concept and keyframe art, clips and bespoke hands-on interactives. Legendary Marvel characters such as Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Black Widow and Hulk are profiled, as well as the Avengers, Ant-Man and the Guardians of the Galaxy. The exhibition will encompass GOMA’s entire ground floor and cinema spaces.

MATHAMAZING

Families can count on a fun day out with the opening of the new Mathamazing exhibition at Queensland Museum’s Sciencentre. Playfully connecting maths to everyday life, the 22 interactive activities — designed to inspire mathematical curiosity and confidence — add up to a whole lot of fun. Visitors will be able to challenge their lateral thinking and topology as they untangle themselves from handcuffs in the Manacle, solve giant floor puzzles, work their way through mazes, test their reaction time, work out the mass of an unknown object, build an arch that won’t collapse, and explore fractals on a touchscreen.

KIDS EXHIBITION // KATE BEYNON: FRIENDLY BEASTS

Kate Beynon draws on multiple visual traditions as the foundation for her artworks, including Western and Eastern comic books, mythology, animation, film, graffiti, calligraphy and fashion. In ‘Friendly Beasts’, Kate Beynon brings to life four hybrid figures who are inspired by mythological figures, deities, theatrical masks and supernatural creatures. Young visitors will meet these benevolent friends – Blue Shaman, Lotus Monkey, Tu-Dao Dog and Gorgon Girl – who each have their own traits and personalities and aim to promote imagination, creative expression and fun.
