Give Your Hair a DIY Winter Busting Treatment

Give Your Hair a DIY Winter Busting Treatment

With the drying effects of heating and the cool weather playing havoc with my hair lately I’ve created a hair and scalp treatment for you to try yourself at home.

Following a recent trip to Bali, I was inspired by the use of natural and locally sourced products that the Indonesian’s use in their hair and beauty regimes. Here is my loose interpretation of the Indonesian creme bath. A hair treatment that was traditionally given to Javanese Princesses as part of their beauty rituals. The creme bath is offered in nearly every Indonesian Spa you come across and now you too can give your hair the royal treatment!

This is a hot oil hair treatment that I’ve combined with a scalp massage. Ayurvedic physicians recommend head and scalp massage to promote clarity of vision and improved focus and concentration. Heh, we could all do with a bit more of that!  Regular scalp massage improves the circulation and alleviates tension and stress. The coconut oil used helps to strengthen and moisturise the hair shaft.

Hot Oil Winter Busting Hair Treatment

  • 1/4 cup of coconut oil (Almond or Jojoba Oil would also be good substitutes)
  • Add 1-2 drops of the essential oils to scent the treatment oil and for the following benefits;
  • Rose – to tone and soothe the scalp
  • Eucalyptus – to cleanse and stimulate the scalp
  • Rosemary – to stimulate circulation to the scalp and reduce oil build-up

Directions

Heat the coconut oil until warm. Remove from heat and add the selected essential oils.

Step 1: Drape a towel over your shoulders to catch any wayward oil.
Step 2: Part the hair in the centre and pour approx 1 tbsp oil on the top of your head. Using fingertips massage the oil into the front of the head.
Step 3: Bend your head forward slightly and apply 1 tbsp to the crown of the head, spread the oil evenly over the top and sides of the head, while massaging firmly with both hands.
Step 4: Bend the head forward again and apply 1 tbsp oil to the base of the skull. Using both hands massage the back of your head.
Step 5: Work the oil into the hair from roots to the ends. Use your fingertips to massage your scalp.
Step 6: Lift the roots of the hair, gently pull and release them.
Step 7: Wrap a towel around your head turban style and leave to absorb for 30 minutes.
Step 8: Shampoo well, rinse and condition as usual.

For the full Royal treatment, don’t forget to brew yourself a lovely cuppa, put your feet up and relax whilst your hair treatment is doing its thing!
