Glass Half Full

When you set that resolution to “get healthy”, chances are, you didn’t think about how your tap water could be getting in your way. But something as simple as switching from tap to filtered water could be the best – and easiest – way to a happy, healthy gut.

Happy gut, happy life. It sounds silly, but it’s true – some of the health concerns you’re struggling with, whether it’s allergies, an autoimmune disease, arthritis or a mood disorder, could be attributed to your digestive health.

See, our gut walls house 70 percent of the cells that make up our immune system, so when something’s messing with our gut flora, any number of health issues could arise. What does this have to do with water, you ask?

“In Australia, our town water is treated to ensure it is safe to drink and is treated in accordance with the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines – which allow up to 33 different chemicals for treatment, including chlorine, ammonia, copper sulphate and fluoride,” says Angie Healy from Pure Water Systems.

Today, chlorine is the most common water treatment method in the world, preferred for its ability to attack and kill bacteria. That’s why it was first added to drinking water supplies way back at the end of the 19th century: to prevent waterborne diseases such as cholera, dysentery and typhoid. But what about the healthy bacteria in our gut flora?

“Chlorine is designed to kill bacteria – good and bad,” says Angie. “Studies into the effects of chlorine on our health are still happening as we speak, but it is common knowledge that many health issues can now be linked to disturbances with our gut flora.”

Among the many Pure Water Systems success stories are tales of improvement with eczema and skin issues, diabetes, weight loss and migraines, as well as a decrease in stomach pains and nausea that used to result from drinking tap water.

So, if your New Year’s Resolution was to prioritise your health – maybe even by drinking more water? – take a minute to consider whether your tap water could be getting in your way.
