It’s Time to Finally Say Thanks to our Teachers

With entries closing on August 10, there’s only six days left to help us choose our favourite teacher.

Looking back on our time at school all of us in the office can pinpoint those teachers that really made a difference in our lives. The one thing many of us regret to admit is that we don’t recall really saying thanks to these magnificent life changers…

Some teachers will tell you that their job can often feel like a thankless profession – even with the enormous reward of helping kids prepare for the rest of their lives. These feeling of being taken for granted could be one of the reasons that teachers are leaving the profession every day? Figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show that more than half of those with a teaching degree are not currently working in education and 20 per cent of education graduates do not even register as a teacher – leaving the profession before they have even entered it.

To celebrate the amazing work teachers do every single day, haven magazine has launched the “haven’s favourite teacher competition” and is seeking entries from kids across Queensland and northern New South Wales to nominate their favourite teacher. We are asking kids to tell us in 25 words or less why their teacher is the best teacher in the world.

haven magazine publisher Keeley O’Connor says teachers change the world every single day, yet they never receive enough thanks for the amazing, yet very stressful, work they do.

“Teachers really have one of the most important jobs in the world,” Keeley says. “I still remember the teachers who made a real difference in my life from when I was in school. What I learned from them has stuck with me forever.”

haven’s favourite teacher competition will be judged by national parenting blogger Sam Jockel of School Mum and the winning teacher will receive two nights away at any ULTIQA resort of their choice, valued at $610. The kids who nominate our five finalist teachers will each receive a $100 voucher to spend on high quality, low-priced art supplies at Ironlak Art & Design.

As a parent to three children, School Mum Sam admits that she finds it “exhausting looking after them most of the time, even when hubby is around to help out”.

“I can’t imagine how challenging it would be at times to have a class of up to 30 kids to not only look after but teach stuff to!” Sam says. “If you ask me, teachers are superheroes and I take my hat off to them for all the time and support they give to our kids, day in and day out.”

With entries closing in just six days it really is your last change to nominate your teacher and tell why they are AMAZING!
