Whether you love or hate the return of the cold weather, you may as well embrace it – it’s not going anywhere for the next couple of months (at least). Here are our 10 favourite things to do during winter.

Go to the footy

Getting all rugged up to head out to Heritage Bank Stadium (formerly Metricon Stadium) and watch the Suns play AFL is when we know winter has arrived. When else do we get a chance to don a scarf (red and yellow or otherwise) here in temperate Queensland? Even if you’re not a fan of the AFL, there’s footy fun to be had at CBUS Super Stadium watching the Gold Coast Titans.

Enjoy a meal fireside

Here in South East Queensland, we’ve got summer sorted with beaches, surf breaks and open-air bars by the bucket load. But what you may not think of when you picture our corner of the world are cosy winters spent by the fire – we’re on a mission to change that. You see, there are plenty of places to enjoy a meal or a beverage by a fireplace here on the Gold Coast. Whether it’s an intimate restaurant, a toasty pub or a cosy cafe, here are our top spots to unwind fireside.

Watch the sunset

Winter sunsets are the best, aren’t they? There’s something so special about watching the sun sink over the horizon, breathing in cool sea air with a beverage (be it a winter warmer or a red wine) in hand. Enjoy a sunset stroll or sit back and relax – in fact, why not pack a picnic? We’ve shared our favourite winter picnic recipes right here.

Restock your winter wardrobe

It may not be ‘beach season’, but these cooler days are good for something – helping us realise the gaps in our (and our kids’) winter wardrobes. Why not hit your local shopping centre or boutique, or indulge in a spot of online shopping to curate your closet for the cooler months? Here’s our guide to winter shopping.

Update your home

With the cool weather officially upon us, we are coveting all things cosy and looking for ways to dress our nest. One place we always turn to for all things interiors inspiration? Dulux. We asked one of their design experts, Andrea Lucena-Orr, to share her top tips for getting our homes ready for the cooler seasons.

Hit the beach

The end of summer doesn’t have to spell the end of family beach days – there are still plenty of ways you can enjoy the beach during winter! From beach games that are fun for the whole family, to winter workouts that get the blood pumping, here’s how to make the most of our backyard, even in the cooler months.

Read more books

Winter days are best spent with a book in one hand, and a warm cuppa in the other. But what are we reading? Here are the books at the top of the stack on our bedside table right now…

  1. ‘The Body Keeps the Score’ by Bessel Van Der Kolk
  2. ‘The Last Thing He Told Me’, by Laura Dave
  3. ‘The Palace Papers’ by Tina Brown

Learn a new craft

If you’re not much of a reader but you’d like to curl up on the couch with something else in hand, why not try a new craft? Crochet and knitting are two great crafts to teach yourself and practice as you watch TV. Bonus: you’ll end up with winter essentials like scarves, beanies, mittens and more!

Make warm winter drinks

Is there anything better than tucking up by the fire on a cold winter’s night, warm beverage in hand? Not really. Get into the cosy winter spirit and give a new hot drink a try. From mulled wine to red velvet lattes, try one of these fun recipes for winter warmers.

Go to the markets

The cool weather is officially upon us. It’s got us dreaming of cosy mornings sipping hot beverages and perusing market stalls, or chilly nights bundled up enjoying food truck fare. Here are the markets we’ll be visiting this winter.
