The borders are open once again, and we’re eager to make the most of our new-found freedom – an adventure in northern New South Wales is just what the doctor ordered! Here are the destinations we’ll be hitting up now that we can travel across state lines.

The Tweed
Our most immediate southern neighbour, the Tweed is something of a local secret – it’s the perfect place for a family getaway, though often overlooked in favour of Coolangatta in the north and Byron Bay to the south. To that, we say, “Good!”. An unspoilt slice of paradise, you don’t need to choose between the beach and the bush on a trip around the Tweed: you can have plenty of both! Whether you’re picnicking in the towns of the stunning Northern Rivers region or hopping aboard a cruise to see the sights from on deck, you’ll be hard pressed running out of things to do. Enjoy getting lost in the small towns of Cabarita, Fingal Head and Tumbulgum, or get a taste of farm life at Kingscliff’s Farm & Co. While you’re there, don’t miss the now reopened Tropical Fruit World! The tropical farm is welcoming intimate farm tours for fruit foraging and plant-based tie dye workshops, and have even put on a pop-up nursery for visitors.

Byron Bay
How lucky are we to have one of Australia’s most notable seaside destinations right here on our doorstep? Take one stroll through Byron Bay’s vibrant streets, a dip in the crystal clear water or a poke around the eclectic markets and you’ll see why world-class celebrities choose to call this hippy hideaway home. Whether you’re catching a live act at the Byron Beach Hotel or enjoying being the easternmost person on the Australian mainland at the Cape Byron Lighthouse – even if it’s only for a moment – there is plenty of fun to be had in this iconic surf town. Fine dining abounds in Byron Bay, with The Mez Club, Rae’s on Wategoes and Asian-fusion hotspot Bang Bang just a few of the restaurants for you to sample around down. But that’s not all – Byron Bay is the gateway to neighbouring locales like Brunswick Heads – making sure to stop off at the iconic Brunswick Hotel – the rolling hills of Bangalow and even Broken Head in the south, which is perfect for a beach day or scenic hike.

Yamba
The quaint and cosy town of Yamba quite literally has everything you need for the perfect family day trip. Pristine secluded beaches, an ocean pool and a tonne of restaurants are what you’ll find along the coast. Head south and plunge into the deep rock pools of Angourie. Whatever the weather, Yamba is the ideal destination for a memorable day trip (or stretch it to a weekend, if you’re lucky). Spend sunny days by the ocean or the ocean pool or rainy days in the historic Yamba cinema, before hitting up the iconic Pacific Hotel for sundowners. Before you head back north, just be sure to immerse yourself in the Yamba life with all of the gourmet foods, arts and crafts and shopping it has to offer.
