It’s gotta be a mum’s dream gig – create a business that combines your passions and interests; work with your best friend and family; and develop a brand that fills a gap in the market while reflecting your own values. For the founders of Skinmade, a natural skincare company based on the Gold Coast, this is their recipe for success.

We go behind the brand, with co-founder Genevieve Wuoti, mum to Mikko (2) and baby Fredrick. Along with best friend and sister-in-law Claire, Genevieve has created a natural skincare line based on the secret recipes her mother-in-law had been making for years.

Fast gaining fans for its environmentally conscious production and natural, healing ingredients, Skinmade is resolutely free from genetically modified ingredients, artificial colours or fragrances, parabens and animal testing. We talk to Genevieve about the “birth” of Skinmade for this family-run business.

How did Skinmade come about?

After having kids, I tried to make my home chemical free, including skincare.  My mother-in-law had a secret book of recipes that she has been making over the years and using on herself and her family.  She felt they were so good that we should share them, so we decided to start a family business based on these recipes.

How long did it take between concept and product launch?

We got started straight away, but it took about a year to get everything ready.

What were your biggest hurdles along the way?

Keeping our products natural.  Making natural products versus synthetic definitely means more work in finding alternative ingredients and natural preservatives, for example.

Why is the organic, food-grade, environmentally conscious route so important to you?

I feel like the world is reversed on this concept.  Organic should be the norm and anything with chemicals in it should be called something different. The more people that support organic, environmentally conscious products and businesses then the more it will become the norm and we will all be healthier and happier for it. Everything we use in our products is safe to eat – herbal infusions, pure cold pressed oils and enriching vitamins and minerals.

What has been the biggest benefit of creating a company with family?

Well, Claire isn’t just family, we have been best friends since kindergarten so it is a lot of fun working together.  We work really hard, but at the same time we get to hang out and joke around a lot too.

IMG_2415What is your best selling product?

Our bright skin oil.  This is seriously amazing and is a core product of our range that came from my mother-in-law’s secret recipe book.

What’s next for Skinmade?

We hope to grow the skincare range and develop some natural remedies for children such as a breathe-easy essential oil mix, chest rub and natural insect repellent.  We will continue to be affordable and want to give everyone the chance to buy natural and organic skincare.  We are very committed to minimising waste and are working behind the scenes on developing 100% compostable packaging.
