Following last week’s 2017 Somerset Celebration of Literature Festival we spoke with one of Australia’s most celebrated and highly acclaimed children’s theatre writers and performers, Nadia Sunde.

Nadia has written four children’s theatre shows and also works as a freelance creative consultant, producer, director and performer on adult and children’s theatre. Nadia uses her skills as a professional performer to engage children in a vibrant and interactive presentation, using drama and comedy to activate children’s imagination and creative curiosity.

What does a usual day look like for you?
My days are generally more ‘unusual’ than usual. This week I have performed a show called ‘1971’ in Brisbane City Hall, danced and sung calypso music at a street festival in Lismore (with fruit on my head!), taught music therapy sessions and sung with the sounds of humpback whales and Chinese alligators as part of a project for the 2018 Commonwealth Games Cultural Program. I love the unpredictability of my work.

What’s a life lesson you wish you could share with your younger self?
Don’t be afraid to fail.

What makes you happy? What makes you sad?
My family, my friends, my dogs, my work and nature bring me great happiness. Dressing up as Frankie Falconette makes me super happy! I feel sad when I witness or experience disrespect…for people and for the planet.

Who is your hero?
Ginny Weasley is one of my greatest heroes from the Harry Potter book series. She’s courageous, open-minded and funny as all get out!!! We’d be friends in real life for sure.

What are you looking forward to most in 2017?
Meeting all the fabulous audiences at our Harry Potter events! Harry Potter fans are the best!!!

Are you a dog person or cat person? What are your pets’ names?
I love ALL animals. But dogs are my favourite. My dogs are called ‘Peperoni’ (maltese cross) and ‘Yoko Bono’ (Chihuahua cross).

What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever eaten?

What book are you reading or what book would you recommend to others?
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows…it’s my third read of the entire series.

What’s your star sign and what traits of that sign best relate to you?
Taurus! A taurean is ruled by the throat…I’m a singer and I love to talk.

What’s your favourite colour?
Green…all shades.

Does vegemite go in the fridge or pantry at your house?
I won’t let vegemite near my house!!!! BLURGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Strawberry Jam is another matter.
