Travel is seriously expensive right now, but we’re itching to get away. These are the five most affordable ways to travel, as a family, without having to sacrifice on comfort or style.

Camping

It doesn’t get much cheaper than a camping holiday (provided, of course, that you have camping gear already) – or more fun! There are some great free campsites to be found, but even if you do have to pay it likely won’t be more than $20 per night per person (these are our favourites). You can pre-cook meals and snacks to bring with you, or choose a campsite that’s close to a pub depending on what your preference is.

Island hopping

We’re lucky to have some incredible islands right on our doorstep – and the best part is, they’re relatively cheap for an ‘overseas’ holiday… haha! One of our personal favourites is Tangalooma Resort on Moreton Island. Family fun abounds, not to mention beautiful natural scenery and local wildlife. There is also Stradbroke Island (you can choose between the north and south, too) close by, or Fraser island a little further afield.

AirBnBs

We’ll be the first ones to admit that AirBnB isn’t as cheap as it used to be, but you can still find some rare gems for a great price! Make the most of the filters to sort your results by price and location, and keep these tips from Thrillist in mind to find the best, cheapest homes.

Van

If you’re keen on the camping without… you know, actually camping, perhaps a van trip is more your speed? It’s one of the best (and most affordable) ways to see more places on your next family holiday, without having to book multiple accommodations. You don’t even need a set itinerary – just get in the van and hit the road! Here are some of our favourite vans.

House swap

Last but certainly not least, why not try house swapping? It’s one of the best ways to travel totally free, while also making sure your house is in good care while you’re gone. There are plenty of house swap websites out there, but Home Exchange comes particularly highly recommended. They have homes available in 159 countries so you’re bound to find the perfect family adventure.

haven

haven is all about family, life and style in Brisbane's inner city suburbs, the Gold Coast, south to Byron Bay. We have been keeping parents in the know for over eight years, with fun, fresh and helpful stories that they can take tips from or treasure in their own library.
