A major photographic fashion exhibition is launching at The Arts Centre Gold Coast on Friday night.

Coming into Fashion: A Century of Photography at Condé Nast celebrates some of the most iconic images from the past century of fashion as the publisher of global fashion magazines Vogue, Vanity Fair and Glamour opens up its restricted photography archive to the public.

Spanning across the past 100 years of fashion photography, the exhibition includes images by Cecil Beaton, Irving Penn, Helmut Newton and Mario Testino. The images can be defined as glamorous, provocative, beautiful, accomplished and magical.

Produced by the Foundation for the Exhibition of Photography the exhibition also includes early work by fashion photography luminaries such as Horst P. Horst, Erwin Blumenfeld, David Bailey, Guy Bourdin, Corinne Day, Deborah Turbeville and Sølve Sundsbø.

Coming into Fashion photography curator Nathalie Herschdorfer says the collection of images show the sharp contrast in the first fashion photographs from the early 20th century compared to the modern day.

“Fashion photography is a way to understand how we represent the construction of female beauty and how it has changed over the years,” Herschdorfer says. ” I wanted to make a selection that represented the history of fashion photography but also included those iconic photos that stood well enough on their own, across any era.

“Some images made in the 1940s could still work today on a magazine cover. They belong to a specific period but are still visually strong today, without regard to the page it was on, the era it came from or the product it was selling.”

The exhibition also includes a selection of vintage couture fashion from The Darnell Collection, which is Australia’s largest private collection of fashion spanning from the late 1700s to the 20th century.

The Gallery and The Arts Centre Gold Coast will be presenting an exciting curation of seminal fashion films and documentaries will be screening throughout the exhibition season, and over two days of talks and forums, guests will hear international and Australian industry leaders discuss the past, present, and future of the world of fashion.

The regular kids and youth workshop series ArtLab will be themed around fashion for the exhibition period, with a new timeslot of adults to join in the fun.

Coming into Fashion: A Century of Photography at Condé Nast is a ticketed exhibition on display at the Gold Coast City Gallery running from 25 November until 18 February. Tickets are on sale now on The Arts Centre Gold Coast website.
