Temperatures are dropping, and our motivation to get out of bed in the morning and hit the gym is going down with them. We’re looking for classes that make us want to leave the cosy comfort of our doonas, and thankfully, there are plenty to choose from. When the weather outside is frightful, get your sweat on indoors with these awesome exercise classes.
Reformer Pilates was initially branded a ‘Victoria’s Secret model workout’, but over the years it has become more accessible to us regular folk. Think of Reformer Pilates like a more intense way to do the moves you’d usually do on a mat in a regular Pilates session – then add a moving carriage, various straps and pulleys and sometimes (just for fun) weights, bands and balls, and you’ve got Reformer Pilates.
HIIT (high-intensity interval training) workouts really burst onto the scene a few years ago, and now it feels like there’s no other way to get your sweat on! The idea is to give 100% of your energy in quick bursts, taking short, intermittent breaks to recover. It’s said to keep your heart rate up and burn more fat in a shorter time period, making HIIT an ideal workout for anyone looking to get fit fast.
Blending Pilates, yoga and ballet poses and postures into one muscle-burning workout, Barre has become a favourite for anyone hoping to lengthen and strength their build. There is a physical ballet barre, which supports you as you perform high repetition, small-range-of-motion movements. It’s a killer for your thighs, abs and bum, and is also said to assist with your posture, flexibility and, of course, weight loss. Best of all, it’s a fun, high-energy workout to throw into your weekly routine.
No Lights, No Lycra
This weird and wonderful form of exercise will certainly get you nice and warm, no matter how cold it is outside. No Lights, No Lycra is a true community project, having started in Melbourne by two dance students ten years ago. There are no lights, no lycra, no instructor, no technique – just pumping tunes and plenty of space for you to throw yourself around and move your body to the rhythm. And, at the end of it, you’re able to call it a “workout”.
Get your Mike Tyson on and punch out your frustrations at a boxing class! If you have a fear of being in the ring, don’t worry – most boxing gyms these days offer fitness-focused sessions (no black eyes necessary) that incorporate boxing skills into an exercise class-style format. Expect to jog, jab and jump, and to hurt the next day – no muscle escapes attention in a boxing class, which is why it’s such a good way to improve your fitness quickly (and have a tonne of fun while you’re at it).
If you’re in need of a workout that will never fail to take your breath away, you’ve found it. Whatever you want to call this workout – spin, cycle, RPM – you’ll always leave red in the face but pumping with energy. Seriously, if you want to relive your clubbing days, just try a spin class. Nothing gets your adrenaline flowing quite like riding to the rhythm of thumping dance beats in a room full of sweaty strangers.
