If you were a child of the 80s like most of us here are haven mag, you’d be well aware of the fact that you should NOT double denim. Exhibit A: Justin and Brittany at the 2001 AMAs. But, you would not believe it. In 2017, double denim is now a thing again.
Yes, double denim is officially a thing right now. All the hipsters and fashionistas are doing it. To help you get back on the DD bandwagon, we spoke to some of our fave fashionistas. Double denim: Do you dare?
The Fashion Pros
Blonde Ambition fashion blogger Brooke Falvey: I definitely do rock double denim, but I prefer to mix denim rather than go for a blue/blue combo. My favourite look is black or white denim jeans with chambray/denim shirt – you can wear the shirt as is or wear it open over a striped singlet or tee.
Pacific Fair stylist Kirsty Ashe: Yes – but it needs to be in a street-style way and worn with a little ‘I don’t care attitude’. The lighter, worn denim works better for this look and I like it with either a striped tee and sneakers or a floral blouse, belt and heeled ankle boots.
The Style Report’s Laura Churchill: Absolutely! Why not? The key is colour contrast though. To stop it looking like a traditional Canadian tuxedo, go for a chambray shirt with a dark jean or ripped boyfriend jeans.
The Fashion Rookies
haven editor Belinda: A child of the '80s, I was NEVER into double-denim – it felt so wrong. But I’m sitting here in my double denim and stripes today (trying to prove to my Gen Y and Z colleagues that I’m on-trend and NOT old)… and I’m actually liking it. Did I actually just say that out loud?
haven editorial assistant Anny: Definitely… I have too much denim in my wardrobe not to! I love denim shorts and a chambray shirt with some sandals in summer or some skinny jeans, heeled boots and my oversized denim jacket in winter. I can even confess to owning some denim shoes…
haven editorial assistant Nicholas: I’ve always been a huge fan of double denim – I’m not sure why so many people are worried about wearing it! It’s definitely my ‘go to’ in winter with either a plain white or striped t-shirt.
