Is there a ballet fan in your house? Filled with gorgeous costumes, stunning dancing and comic chaos, one of the world’s oldest ballets with a modern twist comes to The Arts Centre Gold Coast on Friday 8 September and Saturday 9 September.
Queensland Ballet will perform a new production of La Fille mal gardée, a French ballet that translates as ‘The Wayward Daughter’. It’s a great choice for families and suitable for ballet fans aged 6+, as well as teens, parents and grandparents!
Artistic Director Li Cunxin said the Company was delighted to be bringing this modern classic to Queensland audiences and was sure it would have wide appeal to both ballet lovers and those new to ballet.
‘This is actually one of the oldest ballets in the modern repertoire but our new version, created by French choreographer Marc Ribaud, brings the story into the modern day and sets it in the 1950s with motorbikes and leather jackets!
‘I’m sure audiences will be captivated by this colourful, comic and engaging production that’s full of wonderful characters, gorgeous dancing and many laughs.’
Mr Li said the story was a love story as old as time that follows the main character’s trials as she has her eyes set on someone, but her mother wants her to marry another.
Lise loves Colas. Colas love Lise. But Lise’s mother, the Widow Simone, has agreed that her wayward daughter should marry Alain, the son of a pompous, wealthy vineyard owner. Alain however, is more interested in his precious umbrella than romance…
With this love triangle at the centre of this ballet, what ensues is a series of mischievous antics as Lise works her way out of the Widow’s marriage contract and into the arms of her love-struck beau.
An ensemble of local children also feature in the cast, who were selected from almost 200 children who auditioned in July.
La Fille mal gardée is a delightful and family-friendly production. See it at The Arts Centre Gold Coast on Friday 8 September at 7.30pm or Saturday 9 September at 1.30pm and 7.30pm. Tickets are Adult $56, Concession $48, Student/Child $32 or Group 6+ $45. Book at theartscentregc.com.au or 5588 4000.
