We – like the rest of the world – have been thinking a LOT about Megan Markle this last week. The Hollywood actress-turned-royalty always manages to look polished and poised (she is a duchess, after all) and her maternity style was to. die. for.

For us common folk, choosing maternity wear can be a difficult and daunting task – but it doesn’t have to be! These days, there are so many places to find cool, coveted maternity wear to keep you dressing your best, even during pregnancy.

Whether you’re expecting right now or expect to be expecting in the near future, listen up. We chatted to CEO and creative director of Mama Muse, Stephanie Bailey, about her top tips to dress your bump.

  1. Invest in Basics
With growing breasts and curves, it’s best to constantly update your under garments support and flatter your shape. Make sure you select breathable fabrics such as cotton, bamboo and linen that will help regulate your temperature.
  2. Block Colours
Opting for block colours rather than busy prints which will help you look leaner, and darker shades such as black and navy will help keep you slender – and looking super chic in the process! Add a pop of colour and fun with some fun accessories such as a scarf or shoes.
  3. Dress for your body type
Select silhouettes that are suitable for your body type. Remember that your short, pre-maternity dresses will only get shorter, and those tight pants you used to love will only get tighter. Don’t feel guilty about replacing (temporarily) those much-loved pre-pregnancy pieces with new items that flatter.
  4. Embrace the bump
Tight doesn’t always have to be a bad thing! A body-con dress is designed to trace your silhouette and should be a wardrobe staple during your pregnancy. Not only are body-cons versatile, they are easy to wear, style and will stretch with you!
  5. Denim – JEAN-IUS!
We’ve seen the denim trend all over the runways, so why not try your own spin on the look while you’re expecting? You can rock denim from bump to toe, thanks to advances in fabric technology and innovation that mean nowadays denim materials give more comfortability and stretch than ever before. Jeans or jeggings will last the distance, and are incredible versatile.
  6. Stay comfortable
Pregnancy can be tough on your feet, and some women find that their feet swell during pregnant, even going up a shoe size! It goes without saying that you’ll want to replace stilettos with wedges (if you’re going to be wearing heels at all) and rock some cool ballet flats or sneakers.
  7. Get Pampered, please!
Hair and makeup provide the finishing touches, and can help you feel human again when pregnancy fatigue takes hold. Add some gloss, throw on some bling and even book in for a magic mani – you’ve definitely earned it!
