TVM_Marissa_MonoMarissa Bowden, The Village Markets

Tell us about your business.

I am a co-founder of The Village Markets, a boutique fashion and lifestyle market held on the first and third Sunday at Burleigh Heads State School and the fourth Sunday at Paradise Point Park.

How long did it take between coming up with your idea, and launching?

It was around six months from our initial business and marketing plan, to venue hunting and meetings with Council, to the actual launch of our first event in October 2008.

How do you stay motivated?

I love what I do! And I am so in love with my little family. Plus we live in paradise, seriously! As I write this, I have just got home from Tallebudgera Creek with my kids, they’re now sound asleep and I get to sit down and do some work for myself.

I am passionate about The Village Markets and everything it stands for. It’s such a positive, creative little community. We’re meeting the most amazing, talented people all the time from all walks of life and they are so grateful for what we have created in TVM.

H2O PhotographySmlSonya Perks H2o Underwater Photography

Tell us about your business.

H2o Photography is my passion – it has evolved over several years from exclusive underwater portraits and fashion shoots to ‘above’ water photography ranging from natural maternity and babies, to creative/concept portraits with a dramatic style. Every shoot is different and creative. That’s why l love doing what l do!

What is the best thing about owning your own business?
The joy l get out of being creative on a daily basis and getting to work with some amazing families, models and make-up artists. Also, l can mostly fit in photo shoots and editing around my family life and kids, because it is not a typical 9 – 5 job. I can do my editing and answer emails after the kids are in bed.

How do you manage the work/life juggle?

With solutions and support to make it happen while ensuring everyone’s needs are being met and supported. Childcare/kinder, wonderful parents and some help at home are big factors. There are a lot of late nights worked to ensure everything is running smoothly and to ensure we enjoy the fun and crazy times of being a family together.

How do you stay motivated?

I have a goal which has family at front of mind on top of financial elements.

IMG_1866Toki Matsushita, Fabrikkeborn

Tell us about your business.

fabrikkebørn is: super comfy boy’s clothing and luxe mumma’s bags, using beautiful, soft to touch fabrics and natural textured materials like rayon, linen, slub cottons, natural animal hides and super soft leathers.

Our boys’ fashion range in particular was created purely from passion and struggling to find soft, beautiful, fashionable clothing for our son Harper, who was suffering from eczema since a young age. He was about two years old when we were in the sampling stage and every morning he would go to his wardrobe and always choose the rayon tees and soft cotton shorts because he knew they would feel good against his skin all day. Comfort is the ultimate choice and it was reassuring to know that even at two years old he could tell the difference.

fabrikkebørn is designed and owned by husband and wife team Toki and Pete.

How do you manage the work/life juggle?

Um… it’s still a work in progress. I’m not sure I will ever master that – haha!

What’s the one thing you wish you knew before you started your business?

I wish I knew how to create a strong marketing strategy.

What is the best thing about owning your own business?

The joy of fulfilling a dream and the freedom to work from anywhere!
