There are some things that just can’t be experienced through a screen, and immersing yourself and your family in local culture is one of them. Here are our favourite local spots to frequent when we’re in need of a culture fix.
When it comes to culture hubs on the Gold Coast, you can’t go past our literal Home of the Arts, HOTA! Their jam-packed lineup spans exhibitions, performances and workshops, with plenty of events and activities for the whole family to enjoy. And, when all else fails, you can enjoy a picnic on their beautiful waterfront lawn.
Similar to HOTA, we could hardly list local spots to get your culture fix without including Brisbane’s QAGoMA (Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art) precinct. From the modern art on display at GoMA to the unmissable classics in the Queensland Art Gallery, this is one spot you’ll happily spend an entire family day out.
Surf World Gold Coast
It’s no art gallery, but the Gold Coast’s very own surf museum promises culture of a different kind! It’s home to Australia’s largest collection of surfboards, some dating as far back as 1915, and an incredible display of surfing memorabilia collected by three surf-mad friends and supported by the Gold Coast City Council. It’s a must see.
Queensland Museum and SparkLab
Giant dinosaurs, flying whales and a live ‘science bar’ are just a few of the wondrous sights and experiences you’ll discover at Brisbane’s Queensland Museum and SparkLab (formerly the Sciencentre). The best part is, it’s right by QAGoMA in South Bank’s cultural precinct, so the fun almost literally never stops.
It once supplied power for the largest tram network in the southern hemisphere – now, it’s where nationally and internationally-acclaimed performers, comedians and thespians of all kinds take to the stage. While we love nothing more than a night out with friends at the Powerhouse, there is also plenty for the whole family to enjoy!
