Remember when you were a kid and you used to run around outside without any shoes on – no matter what time of the year it was? In those days, we didn’t get sick very often and, when we did, it was so much quicker to get over a cold or a bug.

That’s the principle that “earthing” is based upon, explain Earthy Living’s Ros and Bill Morrison.

“When we connect to the earth’s natural energy, whether it’s by walking on grass, sand or dirt or connecting to an indoor earthing product, we tap into a foundation for vibrant health, energy and wellness,” said Bill in a previous interview for haven’s ‘Well, well, well, column. “Ros saw immediate benefits when we first came across earthing a couple of years ago – you could see it in her face and eyes.”

Through research and observation, Ros and Bill discovered a number of other benefits to earthing, including…

  • Reduced inflammation
  • Reduced or eliminated pain
  • Improved sleep and reduced snoring
  • Reduced stress, anxiety and irritability
  • Improved energy levels
  • Improved immune function and digestion
  • Improved blood circulation, blood pressure and thinner blood
  • Accelerated recovery from intense athletic activity
  • Relief from muscle tension and headaches
  • Reduced or eliminated jet lag
  • Fewer hormonal and menstrual symptoms

Now that you know why you should do it, it’s time to find out how. Here are five ways to try earthing and get grounded.

Go outside and feel through your feet

This is one of the fastest and easiest ways to ground yourself. Simply go outside, take your shoes off and bring your awareness to the soles of your feet – all of your awareness. Notice how it feels for your toes to be touching the earth, while taking a few deep breaths.

Cover your head

We’re not sure why this works, but it does. If you feel ‘ungrounded’, place one hand over the top of your head, close your eyes and breathe. Try this for 30 seconds to one minute and feel the difference.

Have a cold shower

Or, take a cold swim. Being exposed to cold water can improve your immunity and improve your mood, not to mention it’s really invigorating. Take a few deep breaths and see how long you can endure the cold for.

Lie on the ground

Increase your skin-to-earth contact by lying on the ground, whether it’s on grass or sand. Take some time to feel the earth on your back, the sun on your face and the fresh air on your skin.

Use grounding equipment

Did you know you don’t have to go outside to earth? There are so many grounding blankets, mats and socks on the market that can help you get the benefits of grounding throughout the day.
