As sad as we are to farewell summer, we know we only have limited time to enjoy one of the few benefits of the cooler months: autumn/winter fashion. Here are four easy ways to get your wardrobe autumn ready.

Sweater vests

Is this the most perfect autumn/winter trend for us Gold Coasters? We think so. Much like chunky sandals and sneakers, aviator glasses and tailored pants, the humble sweater vest has transformed from ‘granddad core’ to chic – which is great news for us Queenslanders, since it’s much cooler than an actual sweater. You can easily find one at your local op shop if you’re keen to dip your toe into the trend. Wear it on its own with jeans or a skirt, or over a t-shirt or dress. The possibilities are endless.

Denim maxi skirts

A spring and summer staple (maxi skirts) meets a winter essential (denim) to create one of our favourite autumn trends. Maxi skirts were temporarily neglected in favour of their shorter cousin, the midi skirt, but we’re glad to see them back on the fashion scene with a bang – especially because they’re surprisingly easy to DIY. If you’ve got a pair of jeans (or any pants, for that matter) that you’d like to transform into a skirt, give this tutorial a try.

Funky belts

We’ve lost track of which decade is trending right now – elements of 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and noughties fashion are all dominating the street style scene at once. Which might be why the funky belt trend – which spans all of the above – has gained so much traction. Whether you’re tying a boho silk scarf through your pant loops, adding a chunky belt over a dress (á la 1969 or 2009, depending on the type of belt) or cinching your sweater like a modern french girl, you really can’t go wrong with this trend.

Canadian tuxedo

Love it or hate it, the Canadian tuxedo is here to stay. The original co-ord, it’s proven itself season after season – not only for its versatility, but also its chicness. This season, we’re seeing more feminine takes on the classic ‘jeans and a denim jacket’, meaning this year’s version of the trend is the most accessible yet. Pair a skirt and denim shirt or jacket in matching washes for a uniform look, or go rogue with different denims tied together with matching accessories.
