Sports games aren’t for everyone – or at least, that’s what I thought before I spent an afternoon at Metricon Stadium watching the Gold Coast Suns.
If someone had told me that I would enjoy spending hours watching a sport that I know nothing about, surrounded by impassioned AFL fans in the afternoon sun, I would not have believed them. But I have to admit, they’ve got a pretty good set up over at Metricon Stadium in Carrara. Between the food, gorgeous surrounds, activities (and did I mention the food?), I didn’t feel out of place at all.
While the excitement of the game in the massive stadium is more than enough to keep you occupied, there are plenty of other family-friendly activities on offer around the stadium as well. The free playground contained everything a little AFL fan could want – with inflatable fields and apparatuses for kicking, passing and tackling, tables for drawing and games, and plenty of space to have a kick. The training field was even open for a kick at half time.
The dodgem cars were a particularly popular option, as was the free petting zoo – complete with lambs and piglets. And as if that all wasn’t enough, Lego Batman, Robin and Batgirl were roaming around the stadium handing out free Lego packs as part of this day’s Round 3 theme (to tie in with the release of the Lego Batman movie). The littlies were also given a ‘kids pack’ on entry, with a Batman mask and other activities to keep them entertained during the game. At all Saturday afternoon games, the SUNS always have the playground, free face painting and some kind of extra fun activities on offer, ranging from rock climbing wall to the mini-train.
In all, there was surprisingly so many more things to do at the footie than just watch the footie! It really is a brilliant family-friendly destination that’ll have them all tuckered out and ready for bed by the time the game finishes at 7.30pm!
Oh, and getting to the stadium couldn’t have been easier, with a massive pick up/drop off zone and even a free shuttle from nearby Nerang station. But the best part for families is, no doubt, the family value pack. It includes reserved seat tickets for two adults and two kids (under 15) plus $40 food and beverage credit to spend at the game, all for just $100. Plus kids under 5 go free to all SUNS games!
