Let’s celebrate our blue skies with a spectacle of colour at the inaugural Gold Coast International Festival of Kites, taking place this weekend 26 to 27 September at Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach and Kirra.
For the free family event, which is a joint initiative of Connecting Southern Gold Coast, the Surfers Paradise Alliance and the Broadbeach Alliance, thousands are expected to line the shores to witness the Gold Coast’s most colourful spring event.
Renowned kite flyers from Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Germany and Canada will showcase their incredible skills as each location hosts mass coordinated displays throughout the festival, which is expected to be an annual sky-high exhibition.
Massive handmade creations will fill the skies across the three locations with a 30m octopus, 15m cuttlefish and two bouncing dice taking centre stage at Surfers Paradise; a 30m whale, 30m winged dragon and 20m dolphin a highlight at Broadbeach; and 50 ladybirds at Kirra, sure to delight visitors of all ages.
In other highlights, the Phoenix Kite Collective is certain to inspire awe with its team of eight 4-line revolution stunt kites flying in formation at Surfers Paradise on Saturday morning, midday at Broadbeach, and in the afternoon at Kirra, for 30-40 mins at each site.
The team will repeat their thrilling display on Sunday, this time starting at Kirra in the morning, then Broadbeach at noon, and Surfers Paradise to round out the afternoon.
Representing an unprecedented collaboration between the Gold Coast’s three regional alliances, the Gold Coast International Festival of Kites is geared towards uniting communities for a weekend of family-focused fun and a dazzling rainbow display igniting the skies.
Gold Coast International Festival of Kites will be held at Surfers Paradise beach towards Q1,
Broadbeach near Kurrawa Surf Club and at the southern end of Kirra Beach.
