The Gold Coast community will unite this Friday to celebrate a history making moment at the 2020 season launch of the Gold Coast Suns.

The city’s first ever national female sporting team, the AFLW Gold Coast Suns, will officially start their first season while the GC Suns men kick off their 10th season.

The full squad of the GC Suns men and women players will be present and receive their official 2020 guernseys while guests will be privy to special coach announcements and the chance to rub shoulders with the teams. Food trucks, live entertainment and kids activities are on offer also, with the community invited to bring their picnic rugs to enjoy a night on the lawn at HOTA.

GC SUNS Chief Executive Mark Evans says this season’s launch is extra special with the official introduction of the women’s team and the decade long club milestone culminating.

“The 2020 season launch is truly a historic moment for the Gold Coast as a city in conjunction with the Gold Coast SUNS,” he said.

We’re excited to introduce our AFLW team as they prepare for their first premiership game on February 8 and at the same time become the Gold Coast’s first national women’s sporting team.

“We’ve tried to make the event for the people of the Gold Coast, there will be live music, food trucks and lots of different activities for the kids, there is something for everyone.”

“Both our AFL and AFLW players are proud to represent the Gold Coast on the national stage and we’d love to welcome as many people as possible to come and join us to mark this historic occasion.

Local mother of three, Emma Fisher says her family are looking forward to going to their first ever GC Suns games this season and attending the launch on Friday.

We’re excited to take the kids along to some games this season as the atmosphere is always so electric and it represents a great night out for our whole family,” she said.

I’m not a die hard AFL fan, but I really enjoy seeing the kids look up to their sporting stars who they have met already at the Suns Beach Training. We have not been regulars in past years, but are dedicating some weekends this year to getting behind our team and doing something we all enjoy together as a family too.

“With the initiation of the women’s team as the Coast’s first national female sporting team – I think that’s something for all Gold Coasters to be proud of and my girl is actually already calling them ‘her team’I think it is great for young women of the Gold Coast to have this opportunity to watch women’s sport at the top national level too.”

The 2020 Suns Season Launch will kick off this Friday night (31st Jan) from 5pm to 8pm at Home Of The Arts (HOTA) – on the lawn at the outdoor stage.

The FREE community event hosted by Jess Skarrat and Dan Anstey will feature DJ Fletcher live onstage, giveaways for the kids. Food trucks will be available for guests to purchase delicious bites from Barraca Street Grill, Samba Catering Company, Little Wahaca Latin American Street Food, Greens on Grains and The Gladiator Mobile Coffee. Guests are welcome to bring their own picnic hampers as well. A licensed lawn bar area will be available.
