The father-son project opened its doors last week, becoming the first gin and whisky distillery and tasting room on the Gold Coast – we’re giving one lucky dad and his friend the chance to win the ultimate Granddad Jacks experience.

David and Luke Ridden have joined a growing list of craft producers in the seaside suburb of Miami, but their distillery – Granddad Jacks – has a major difference.

The gin and whisky distillery and tasting room will recreate the age-old family recipes as an ode to David’s grandfather, and Luke’s great grandfather, David Goulding (otherwise known as Granddad Jack) and his passion for craft spirits.

“Each blend, and each signature cocktail, has been crafted with special moments in mind,” says Luke. “’65 Miles’ pays tribute to Granddad Jack’s determination, ‘Two Pencils’ honours his ingenuity, and ‘The Greenhouse’ commemorates his warm nature and giving spirit.

“If any man came seeking council, Granddad Jack would invite them into the greenhouse amongst the tomatoes, pour a small glass of spirit and talk about life and that’s the feeling we want to create here at Granddad Jacks.”

Granddad Jacks serves up tasting paddles with its three flagship gin bottlings (65 Miles, Two Pencils and Greenhouse) and also delivers a craft cocktail list – that celebrates the native botanicals used to flavour the gin – and small batch whisky.

“We have worked with local suppliers from start to finish and the tasting room is a place for the community to come together; it’s about getting back to that face-to-face connection, sharing a unique experience with friends and family, and meeting new people from within your local community,” says Luke.

Honouring Granddad Jack’s upbringing during the Great Depression, the 250sqm architecturally designed building on Lemana Lane takes inspiration from the early 1900s era and built with recycled materials, giving the building a hundred-year-old feel. Exposed brick walls are decorated with black and white family photographs, and family heirlooms and sentimental knick-knacks on display.

“The brand is founded on integrity, hard work and Granddad Jack’s never-give-up attitude,” Luke said. “At 6.00pm each day, the bell will ring and everyone with a drink in hand will be asked to raise a glass to Granddad Jack, because he’s the reason we’re all here together.”

With the ability to BYO food, the neighbourhood distillery is set to be the Gold Coast’s most chilled out spot for locals to connect over an afternoon drink, pre or post-dinner tipple or celebrate a special occasion. Tours are also available, and educational workshops and presentations – led by distillers – are also on the horizon.
