You could just about call it Little Mexico. And we’re not talking about the influx of interstate seachangers. The Gold Coast is riding a Mexican wave of epic proportions – surf the best of the best with us.

Take your tastebuds on vacay:

2Mexicali-2MexiCali, Nobby Beach: Chill on the deck with one of MexiCali’s frozen margaritas, or perch inside for Cali-style Mexican with a vibing atmosphere. Our pick? The guac. Or the fish taco. Or the deep fried jalapeno with goat’s cheese. Or the . . . you know what? It’s all good. Check it out. And don’t miss Taco Tuesday – $5 tacos so you can trial and taste to your heart’s content without breaking the bank.

Pop-Taco-squarePop Taco, Currumbin: Just when you think you’ve gotten lost along Currumbin Creek Road, the Pop Taco sign looms out of the darkness and lures you in, like a siren song of salsa and authentic Mex flavours. A street food stand with a difference, this casual spot has all the makings of an easy night out – BYO, kid-friendly, and seriously good value. Our group tried a taste of tostadas, tacos and more for just $22 a head.

Sigueno’s, everywhere!: Mobile Mexican? Yes, please. Inspired by LA food truck culture, jump on the bandwagon and chase that van! Check out the website for daily locations and the fresh menu. Or hit up The Village Markets to start your weekend right with a little morning Mex.

Bonita Bonita, Mermaid Beach: Tucked away at Mermaid Beach, Bonita Bonita is seriously good food and flavours, with styled-up decor. The pulled pork taco with Bonita slaw and pineapple salsa satisfied our obsession, while the Ginger Mojito was one of the best variations of this classic drink we’ve tried.

California Tacos, Burleigh Heads: Friends Ty and Andy, creators of California Tacos, bring to Burleigh the traditional food and flavours they grew up loving, from the Baja region of southern California and northern Mexico. Try the self-proclaimed Best EVER Pescado (Fish) Taco, or the Pollo Asada Taco with spicy salsa.

Montezuma’s, national: Opening in Burleigh Heads in 1978, the now franchised Montezuma’s is a Mexican classic. A huge menu ensures there’s something for everyone, from kids to grandparents. Our pick? The classic Montezuma’s Delight – vegetarian, chicken or beef with masses of salad, sour cream and ranchero sauce.
