We have TikTok to thank for a lot of things: VSCO Girls,  our kids’ embarrassing dancing in the supermarket and now, whipped coffee.

This tasty trend has taken the online world by storm, having first gained popularity in South Korea earlier this year. According to Google Trends, searches for ‘whipped coffee’ and ‘TikTok coffee’ peaked in mid-April, and now the drink has cemented a place in the hearts of millions of coffee drinkers all over the world.

So, what exactly is it?

‘Whipped coffee’ – otherwise known as dalgona coffee, after a kind of Korean sweet – is a combination of equal parts instant coffee, sugar and hot water, beaten by hand or with an electric beater for seven-odd minutes until whipped. While most people opt for two tablespoons of each, you can make as much as you like – and once you taste it, you’ll definitely want more.

To serve, half-fill a glass with a few ice cubes and milk of your choice, then spoon the whipped coffee on top, stir and enjoy.

If you don’t have instant coffee, but do have a coffee machine that takes pods or grounds, simply make an espresso, pour it into a bowl then add the sugar. We tried it this way, too, and it worked just as well!

And, if you’re not a fan of coffee, note that you can substitute in powdered teas like matcha or chai for a frothy, creamy treat.

Watch this video, and then recreate it for yourself!
