Surfers Paradise SLSC is looking for its newest Nippers with its sign-on this Sunday.
With the beach as the classroom (what more could you want?) the kids gain confidence by passing the tests of swimming, body boarding, beach sprints, dolphin-diving, spotting a rip and having fun with new friends.
Surfers Paradise Surf Life Saving Club’s new Nippers’ coach Phil Clayton has had an outstanding career as a member of the club since 1998 and a professional Ironman for 15 years. Phil has won numerous ironman races and the world ironman title in 2000.
“I’ve taught hundreds and hundreds of people through this program,” Phil says. “I’ve also been the head coach of Kurrawa Surf Club and the Australian under 23 head coach for surf life saving.”
Kids can join Nippers at age 5 and will get to reap the benefits of Phil’s extensive experience both on the sand and in the water.
“My philosophy in surf life saving is that skills are everything. I think a smart racer will always beat a fit racer.
“My job is to pass on the skills I’ve learned in my career in both racing and coaching to the next generation,” Phil says.
Why should my kids join Nippers?
Phil says Nippers teaches kids real skills that will still with them for the rest of their lives. Beyond the skills he’s teaching, his top priority is that everyone has fun.
“One of the main skills I teach is surf awareness,” Phil says. “That is how to read the ocean and understand the environment. It’s important for the kids to understand the wind and currents and what it’s doing above and below the water.”
Parents can also join Surfers Paradise SLSC. Most parents who join up with their kids take one of the hundreds of different courses available in surf life saving.
Once kids hit age 14 they move up into the senior club and do patrols on the beach, working with senior lifeguards on Surfers Paradise beach. To do this they are taught skills in: CPR, beach awareness, ocean awareness and using signals and flags to communicate when they are out to sea.
The Surfers Paradise SLSC is having its first sign on for Nippers this Sunday August 27. To join you just need to turn up at the surf club or visit the website.
