Every year, the Surf Life Saving Foundation offers their supporters the chance to win six luxurious prize home lotteries. We chatted with Melanie Thompson, head of the Surf Life Saving Foundation, about the latest prize home at Sanctuary Cove and how it’s helping save lives on our beaches.

Tell us about the Surf Life Saving Foundation’s prize home lottery?
The Surf Life Saving lottery offers people not only the chance to win a magnificent luxury home but also the opportunity to support a great cause. We run six prize home lotteries a year and our current prize home is a stunning four-bedroom contemporary oasis located in one of Australia’s most prestigious leisure and lifestyle communities – Sanctuary Cove on the Gold Coast. It really does offer a complete lifestyle sanctuary, and is valued at a significant $1,294,572.

What are your favourite parts of the home?
I love the home’s impeccable, modern feel and stylish furnishings. This property has been designed to take advantage of the beautiful QLD sunshine all year round – from the cool wooden accents and high ceilings to the stunning in-ground pool and alfresco entertainment area.

The new owner will also receive a deluxe four-seater golf buggy valued at over $13,000, allowing them to easily navigate Sanctuary Cove’s two championship golf courses and the five-star Intercontinental Sanctuary Cove Resort is just a short buggy ride away!

Can you explain how the lottery program helps to keep beachgoers safe?
Our prize home lotteries help to raise much-needed funds for Surf Life Saving in Australia.

Surf Life Saving is a proud community cause that has been operating since the early 1900’s and relies heavily on the public’s financial support.

Sometimes it’s easy to forget that surf lifesavers volunteer their time to patrol our beaches. Last year alone, our surf lifesavers rescued 10,879 people! These volunteers are extraordinary people and funds raised help to ensure they are equipped to keep our family and friends safe and protect our Australian way of life.

Why does Surf Life Saving need public support?
One beach patrol costs in excess of $80,000 per year, and I think this highlights just how critical community support is to the movement.

The sun, surf and sand are the reasons we love going to the beach but these are also the very elements that damage the rescue gear and equipment that our surf lifesavers need to save lives. Governments and businesses do help us out but surf lifesavers couldn’t do their vital work without the generosity of the public.

What is the purpose of the Surf Life Saving Foundation?
The Surf Life Saving Foundation is a national body that was established to ensure Surf Life Saving’s financial sustainability. We do this by engaging with the wider Australian community and initiating and managing fundraising programs to provide a sound financial base for Surf Life Saving both now and into the future.

Along with Surf Life Saving Australia, the Surf Life Saving Foundation strives for zero preventable deaths in Australian waters.

What else should we know about the current prize home lottery?
The lucky winner, who will be announced on Friday 24 August, will not only become the proud owner of a prestigious Sanctuary Cove home but will also take away $20,000 Gold Bullion to help kick-start their new life and a $1,000 Golf World gift voucher.

What’s it like on lottery draw day?
Draw day always takes place on a Friday and it’s a big event for everyone at the Foundation. It’s such a privilege to make that life-changing phone call to one of our valued supporters, and the whole Surf Life Saving Foundation team gathers around the phone, ready to congratulate our winner – their cheers can definitely be heard on the other end of the line!

How do winners typically respond?
Everyone’s reaction is different; however, it’s often hard to convince the winner that we’re not prank calling them! There is generally an element of disbelief that eventually turns into sheer excitement and delight. It’s also interesting to see how each winner makes the most of their incredible prize – some use the property as a holiday retreat, others choose to live in the home and some might decide to sell or place the home in the rental market. Whatever they do, it changes their lives forever and we love them to keep in touch to share their stories.
