Liz Cantor is that gorgeous Channel Seven TV personality who, among other things, brings amazing news to lucky lotto players each week. But did you know she’s also mum to Kit (5 months) . Here’s how she juggles life and her little love…
Tell us about your business/current role?
I’m a weather presenter for 7 News, as well as a presenter for the live Lotto draws and the lifestyle shows Queensland Weekender and Creek to Coast.
What made you want to go down this path?
I’ve always been a storyteller… ever since I was a little girl.
What’s your business background?
I used to be a competitive surfer for Billabong and I’ve also completed a Journalism degree.
Who were your mentors along the way?
7 News anchor Kay McGrath, my fellow presenters Bridget Adams and Laurel Edwards and journalist Mia Freeman.
What time does a typical day start for you?
Kit should wake around 7am every morning, so I try to wake up before him and put a pot of coffee on. He’s currently still waking up once or twice a night, but the second he starts sleeping through the nights I’m looking forward to getting up early and doing some morning yoga once again!
Who does the cooking and cleaning at your house?
I share these chores with my hubby, Ryan Lysaught. He’s a better cook than me, and I’m a better cleaner.
If you have 10 minutes to yourself, what do you like to do?
I stretch for 10 to 15 minutes, or run down the beach and jump in the ocean – it clears my head swimming through the waves!
What do you do for childcare?
I share the load with my husband – on the three days that I work we tag team with Kit! My mother in law also helps out and watches him on Mondays while I’m at work.
What sort of one-on-one activities do you do with your child?
Our weekly joy is Tuesday morning swim school. I take him to Jump Swim School, and they have a program all about teaching babies survival techniques in water – how to float, how to find the edge of the pool, that sort of thing. Living on the Gold Coast and being such a water baby myself, this is really important to me. I also love reading him books and watching him play with our dog, Bear.
What do you do for fun as a family?
We love adventures, road trips and days at the beach under a big umbrella!
What is your favourite thing to do for date night with your partner?
A beautiful dinner at a Greek restaurant called Hellenika on the Gold Coast – with wine!
What is your favourite local place to visit?
Snapper Rocks. My husband and I take it in turns – one surfs while the other plays on the beach with Kit, and then we swap.
How about favourite place to eat out as a family?
We love treating ourselves to a weekend breakfast at Elk café. Kit has some mushy avocado and egg yolk.
Where do you head to when you get time for a girls’ night out?
As Kit’s still so little and I’m still breastfeeding, nights out are hard. I’m all about meeting the girls for a mani-pedi and chat while Kit sleeps in the pram, and nothing beats a good walk and talk with a girlfriend while baby sleeps in the pram.
What is your best beauty tip for mums?
Sleep in a hair treatment once a week!
Favourite place to shop (locally and online)?
Really enjoying the newly renovated Pacific Fair on the Gold Coast – they have everything there! My favourite online store is ShopBop.
Must-have parenting tip or tool?
Swim lessons – babies can swim before they can walk! And they sleep a treat following class. I also followed the book ‘Save our Sleep’ with Kit which really helped me establish a routine for him, so I was comfortable with going back to work knowing he was on a schedule, which gave him a sense of security.
Can you share any tips on finding the right work/life balance?
Everyone is about this word ‘balance’ these days but, let’s be honest – it’s bloody hard to achieve! I kind of think ‘screw trying to perfect balance’ – take each day as it comes and, if you have an off day, remember that tomorrow’s a new day and you can reset and restart. Don’t sweat the small stuff. For me, family will always come first…. we just may be eating take-out a little more often on the days I’m at work at the moment!
How do you stay motivated in your career?
I really, really love what I do – sharing information and people’s stories. I’m so passionate about travel, adventure, and the weather, so for me it’s actually a joy to go to work and do my job. It means a lot to me that I can be a mother and still contribute financially to our family.
