To keep the Mother’s Day love going, we chatted to one of Brisbane’s most stylish mums about all things motherhood and style, Annabel Falco. She dishes on life with her two kids Oscar (4) and Valentina (2), her husband Josh and her pup, Chilli.
Tell us about your business or current role – where did the concept come from, and what’s your business background?
Lately I’ve been struggling with this question – I wear so many hats! I am a trained Journalist and am the current Fashion Editor for Q Weekend magazine. I am the Fashion Ambassador for Brisbane City/ Queen St Mall. I also regularly work with the likes of Sass & Bide, Aje, Saba, David Jones and Seed Heritage to create content and host seasonal styling events.
My current role has evolved over time. I started in retail and then moved into fashion journalism and styling. I co-owned a PR/ Publishing/ Branding Agency for a few years before settling into full-time content creation and fashion styling.
No matter the job description, fashion is always at the forefront of what I do.
What time does a typical day start for you, and what does your morning look like?
My alarm usually goes off at 5/ 5:30am so I can fit some solo exercise in. Kids are up at 6:30am and then it is go go go! Monday’s we have a full house with the kids, our nanny and one of my styling assistants all working from my home. Tuesday’s are a little slower as they are my day with the kids. Wednesday’s are for meetings, work appointments and fashion pulls. Thursday’s are for shooting content. Fridays are for fashion returns, invoicing and office admin. Weekends are STRICTLY family time. I LOVE structure and routine!
If you have 10 minutes to yourself, where do you go and what do you like to do?
If I only have 10 minutes, I’m probably going to go for a walk or will meditate. With two kids and a very sociable job, I crave peace and quiet.
If your kids are young, what do you do for childcare? If they’re older, do they do any extracurricular activities?
My kids are 4.5 and 2.5 so I definitely need help as a working Mummy. On Monday’s I have a Nanny at home with me. This way I can get work done in our home office but still have lunch with them; be there if they fall over; applaud their drawings/ lego builds/ couch fortes. Wednesday’s my Mother takes Valentina and Oscar has Kindy. Both kids are at kindy/daycare on Thursday and Friday.
What do you do for fun as a family?
We love going for walks to our local park. We pick up coffees/ babycino’s and croissants and have breakfast under the trees. We also love to go for drives to local beaches or lakes and spend the afternoon by the water. In the last few months, Josh and I have also been road testing public dinners with the kids… so far so good!
What is your favourite thing to do for date night, or to eat out with your kids?
Date night without the kids usually involves dressing up, a nice dinner, an early bed time, a sleep in and then a morning run together. We sound so boring I know haha! If we have the kids, we try and take them to a kid-friendly restaurant followed by ice-cream along James St or by the Brisbane River.
Where do you head when you need a girls’ night out?
Unfortunately this is probably the area that needs work – my poor girlfriends have been severely neglected of late! It always involves dressing up, cocktails and dinner at a newly opened restaurant. I’m not a particularly big drinker so I’m usually in bed at a reasonable hour.
What’s your must-know fashion or beauty tip for mums?
In regards to fashion: prints hide a multitude of sins including sticky finger prints and creases! Beauty tips would be a tinted moisturiser and big sunglasses!
What’s your favourite place to shop?
Brisbane City! It has everything from high-end international designers through to high-street trend pieces. You can get everything sorted in the city!
Must-have parenting tip or tool?
I think it is so important to have time each week for you. No kids. No partner. No friends. No family. Even if it is just an hour. Do something for you! Read a book. Go to the movies. Go for a walk. Time away often makes you appreciate what you have at home… and keeps you sane!
