The New Year has arrived with a bang. But before you get lost in the flurry of emails, deadlines and ‘small stuff’, take a moment to take stock and set some solid business resolutions for the year ahead. Get set to supercharge your business – and yourself! – with our new ideas for a new year.

Whether you’re the CEO, MD, GM or a sole trader working at your dining table, your personal approach to business has a direct effect on your ability to succeed, grow, boost staff morale, and maintain your stamina throughout the challenges of the year ahead. Take the time to concentrate on the ‘big rocks’ first – the important stuff, the stuff that impacts your relationships, health, work structure and strategy. Then let the ‘little rocks’ fall into place. By the end of the year? You’ll have conquered mountains, not just rocks!

Our top resolutions to boost your business in 2015:

  1. Prioritise sleep. Yes, we know running your own business is a 24/7 gig, but unless you have some super-powers we don’t know about, you’re still human. And humans need sleep. Consistent, regular sleep without devices pinging and glowing in the night. Get more sleep and you’ll have more energy to smash your goals. If you’re addicted to your phone, use it to your advantage – set a reminder each night to power down, relax and get yourself to bed.
  2. Create time for planning. No, not once a year when you write your strategic plan. Carve regular time in your calendar to concentrate on your business each week. An hour away from your desk to plan, visualise and explore reaps huge rewards. Yes, you can afford it. One hour. Every week. To dream big, and chart a path to success.
  3. Discover and remember your ‘why’. It can be easy to get caught up in the ‘small stuff’ of your business – orders, finances, suppliers, logistics. If you’ve forgotten – or never considered – WHY you are in business, take the time for some reflection. Once you know why you do what you do, you’ll make smarter strategic decisions and ditch the ‘junk’ that clogs your time and headspace.
  4. Have one-on-one meetings with your team regularly. Team meetings are efficient for information sharing, but to really boost morale, find out exactly what’s going on in your business and identify problem spots or opportunities within your team, you need an individual chat. Thirty minutes with a set agenda including a Work in Progress update and time to raise issues will pay dividends in creating a turbo-charged team.
  5. Monitor, measure and optimise. You can’t manage what you don’t measure. Work out what your KPIs are for 2015, then measure and review regularly. The only way to kick goals is to know where the goalposts are – so set your objectives upfront then monitor your performance consistently to spot growth potential and contingency plan for looming obstacles.
