You may see the white button up shirt as a boring basic, but with a bit of creativity, it can be one of the hardest-working pieces in your wardrobe.
To prove it, we’ve curated the five best ways to wear it – and ways you would *actually* wear it, no less. We won’t try to convince you that wearing your shirt backwards will look as good as it did on that blogger (because without carefully posed photos and perfect styling, it probably didn’t look all that good on her, either).
- As a shirt
Yep, we’re starting simple. One of the best ways to wear your white button up shirt is its intended purpose: as a shirt. Whether you tuck it into jeans and pair with heels for a work-appropriate look, let it hang loose over your favourite denim shorts or go for a ‘French tuck’ (half in, half out) over a mini skirt, you can’t really go wrong. Why not tie it up Daisy Duke style and wear it with a silky midi skirt (paired with white sneakers, heels or sandals) for the perfect day to night outfit? With a white button up, the world is your oyster.
- As a ‘shacket’
Have you heard of the shacket? This shirt-jacket hybrid is all the rage, especially here in temperate Queensland where we rarely want for an actual jacket. The rise of the shacket has proven to be positive for the white button up shirt, as it offers a way to try this trend through the warmer months. We’re excited to wear button up shirts over mini dresses, crop tops, pants and skirts all summer long.
- As a co-ord
If you’re eager to try the co-ord trend (which has by now surpassed trend status and is definitely here to stay) but don’t want to invest in a set you’ll probably never wear again, dip your toe in the water with your button up. The best thing about white button up shirts is they’re so simple, they’re incredibly easy to pair things with – all you need is a pair of white shorts, a white mini skirt or even white pants in the same or similar fabric and you’re on your way.
- As a dress
It’s time to bring out the big guns, and by this we mean dig out the biggest white shirt you own (or perhaps that your husband owns?!). The key to wearing a button up as a dress is going big, so if you don’t own something that will fit the bill, check out the mens’ section of your local op shop, Kmart or Target, or even hit up Lowes! While you can totally get away with this look when you hit the beach, if you want to make it more school-run appropriate, opt for a pair of black or white bike shorts underneath. Simple.
Okay, now is where you can get really creative. We’ve seen people do some weird and wonderful things with their clothes on the internet, but when it comes to actually trying them, they never look quite right – these three ideas are the exception. Check out this video for a unique way to tie your white button up for dressed up or dressed down occasions, or have fun pairing any crop tops or corsets you own over the top of your white shirt!
