Fashion is totally cyclical. As parents, we’re seeing our kids rock the same scrunchies, flared jeans and chunky sneakers we rocked in our youth. So when it comes to finding the coolest threads, it actually pays to look back, not forward, and vintage/op shopping is the best way to do that.

Not only that – it saves, too! Shopping secondhand can mean snapping up designer and high quality garments for a fraction of their retail price. Depending on where you shop (Lifeline, Vinnies…) it can also save lives, helping these organisations raise much needed funds to help people in your community.

And, as if all that weren’t enough, shopping pre-loved is one of the most sustainable ways to expand your wardrobe. According to Fashion Revolution, about one-third of the fashion industry is yet to take action against reducing the incredible amounts of waste it creates – every second, a garbage truck of textiles is landfilled or incinerated. Eek.

So now that you know why it’s so great to shop pre-loved, let us tell you where to do it.

BRICKS AND MORTAR

Vinnies
We couldn’t talk op shopping without mentioning Vinnies. These stores – owned and operated by the St Vincent de Paul Society – can produce serious gems, as long as you have the patience to look through each and every item. We have been known to drive across town to one of the ‘fancy’ suburbs to check out their local Vinnies – all we’ll say is, it was worth it.

Lifeline Vintage Revival
If you’re not one for sifting through countless racks of pre-loved clothes, you might want to opt for Lifeline’s Vintage Revival stores. They offer a more curated selection of secondhand pieces, sorted by decades so that you can easily find what you’re looking for. Plus, did you know that Lifeline also has an online offering, with free shipping for orders over $50?!

Swop
Secondhand store or funky boutique? We’ll let you be the judge. Swop operates on a ‘buy, sell, trade’ basis, meaning not only can you come in to shop, you can also sell and trade your own pre-loved pieces there (provided they’re not mass produced or fast fashion items).

Suitcase Rummage
One of the longest running preloved markets in Brisbane, Suitcase Rummage brings sellers and buyers together under one premise: everything must be sold from a suitcase. You can shop secondhand, handmade and recycled goods for super cheap, and even book in to sell out of your own suitcase if your wardrobe is overflowing.

eBay
You’ve no doubt bought at least one thing from eBay in your lifetime, but if you’re not a regular on the site, you may not have spotted their ‘Vintage’ category. It takes time and patience, but handy features like the ‘Save Search’ and ‘Watchlist’ features can help notify you when something you’re searching for has been posted or discounted.

Depop
eBay’s cooler little sister, Depop is where the kids are buying and selling their secondhand items. It’s here that people from all over Australia and the world sell their preloved pieces, often for super cheap. One haven team member snagged a YSL trench coat on the app for just $120. True story.

The Real Real (US based)
If you’re looking for designer garms, you can’t go past the Real Real. They stock haute couture designers like Givenchy, Chanel and Louis Vuitton, plus cool newer labels like The Row and Sandro Paris, all for a fraction of the retail price. Shipping to Australia is pricey, but when you weigh it up against your savings, it’s usually totally worth it.
