Whether you’ve got a tall one, a short one, a hairy one, a bald one, a funny one, a serious one, a sporty one or even a nerdy one, you’ll only ever have one dad. On the eve of father’s day, haven celebrates some of the raddest dads we know…
Monster Jam Driver
If you’ve never heard of the Monster Jam truck show, just think of huge Tonka toys standing nearly four metres tall and four metres wide, weighing around 5500kg and driven by real-life people in front of crowds of thousands all around the world. These beasts perform breathtaking stunts and can accelerate from 0-100kph in under three seconds. They literally fly – covering up to 50m in a single leap (a distance greater than 14 cars side by side) and up to 12m skywards. Cool, huh? Well, meet Scott Buetow. He drives one and is probably one of the raddest dads you’ll ever meet. Just ask Skylar (20), Parker (17), Brock (15), Dawson (14) or Adrina (10).
Take us back to the moment you met your first child. What do you remember of that precise moment?
I knew instantly what love was and what mattered in life.
What’s the best thing about being a dad?
Watching your children blossom and seeing them grow right in front you.
What is the most challenging part of your role as a dad?
Watching your children fail and struggle at times with life. I get through by offering advice and assisting as much as they will allow. Kids tend to think you don’t understand what they’re going through but in reality you have been there too many times throughout your life. All you can do is give advice and what they do with it is up to them. This without a doubt has been my biggest struggle with my teenagers.
How would your kids describe you in three words?
I asked all five to name one word each that they would describe me and they replied: Funny, hard-working, COOL (LOL!), serious and intense. I thought they would’ve had “competitive” as one word – I never let/want my kids to beat me at anything. I hate to lose!
How do you and your kids’ mother share the parenting role? What are your areas of expertise compared to hers?
Their mother is a coddler and tends to baby them LOL! I’m harder and more disciplined. It balances everything out.
If your family had a reality TV show, what would it be called?
Did your father give you any parenting tips? If so, what were they?
He always said ‘What goes around, comes around. Your day is coming, just wait’. And my father is dead on. Payback has bitten me in the butt with my boys!
What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learnt from being a dad?
Patience and biting my tongue.
Dream big: What’s the best Father’s Day gift you could ever receive this year?
A 1967 Corvette 427 Tri-power convertible – ha! That’ll never happen! Honestly, I actually like when they make me cards and put a personal note in it. I love reading them.
On the flip side of that, what is your kids’ pocket money actually going to buy you at the Father’s Day stall at school this year?
You never know, it’s always an awesome surprise.
