A spectacular human art installation is set to come to life on the golden sand of Surfers Paradise, and it’s all in the name of positive mental health.
Sand Safari Arts Festival returns on February 14 to March 1, but this year, it’s debuting a brand new segment geared toward mental health and wellbeing.
‘Sand Talk – The Art of Conversation’ will see a community-minded collective form a massive speech bubble, spelling out the tagline ‘#yourstory’. The immersive art experience is aimed at sparking important conversations, and encourage visitors to share words of hope and inspiration on a large white container.
The container will be displayed on the Surfers Paradise foreshore throughout the 17-day event, being officially opened on Sunday February 23 on the final day of the festival – the much-awaited free Community Day.
A range of mental health and charity groups will be on-site to host stalls and provide support. There will also be the opportunity to participate in a range of free activities and games, which will be suitable for the whole family.
“Every day of Sand Safari Arts Festival is a great one but the Sand Talk Community Day will be particularly special when the community joins forces to raise awareness of mental health and wellbeing in the most public of settings,” says Surfers Paradise Alliance CEO Mike Winlaw.
Mike explains that Sand Talk will bring much-needed conversation about mental health and wellbeing to the heart of our country’s leading holiday destination in an engaging, relatable and powerful manner.
“While Sand Safari Arts Festival is all about fun and creativity, it provides us with a priceless opportunity to engage people who may not otherwise be exposed to reflection about mental health and wellbeing,” says Mike. “The safe and welcoming nature of the event fosters an environment where visitors will feel comfortable to share their stories and life experiences, thus strengthening individual and community mental health and wellbeing.”
Established in 2012, the free and family-friendly Sand Safari Arts Festival is the foremost sand-and- sea-inspired arts event in the Asia-Pacific region and attracted more than 280,000 people in 2019.
Along with a dedicated entertainment zone and family activities, the event will see Australia’s best professional sand sculptors transform the Surfers Paradise foreshore into a fairy tale wonderland.
Little Red Riding Hood, Pinocchio, Cinderella and The Little Mermaid will be among the fairy tale favourites to emerge from the sand, along with several large-scale fairy tale-inspired immersive experiences that will allow visitors to capture the ultimate photo opportunity.
Sand Safari Arts Festival will also once again be home to the Australian Sand Sculpting Championships, with 15 talented sculptors, including three highly acclaimed international sculptors set to showcase their skills across three days as they bid to design and intricately carve a fairy-tale scene to rule them all.
