A fresh start, a creative space, an inspired mind – embrace the new season to create a restful, inspiring space at work or home.

It’s no secret that an organised space free from clutter reduces stress, improves productivity and ignites creativity. A fresh start, a creative space, an inspired mind – embrace the new season to create a restful, positive space for you and your family.

Research shows we’re groaning under the weight of our ‘stuff’ – at home, at work, and even in our heads. Forty per cent of Australians feel anxious or guilty about the clutter in their homes, and almost 60 per cent of women wouldn’t want visitors to see a room in their house because of clutter. We’re losing the art of family meals at the dinner table because it’s covered in ‘stuff’ so we eat on the couch, or munch on the go instead. And we’re experiencing constant low-level stress from the weight of our mental ‘to-do’ lists – pay the bills, don’t forget the milk, book the car service and run a hefty social calendar for the family with military precision.

Who wouldn’t want a fresh start? Spring provides the perfect opportunity to review, reuse or recycle. If the clutter is getting you down at home, get active and be ruthless. Tackle one room at a time, and take a tip from productivity experts – only handle each item once. Decide whether it’s a keeper, bin-worthy or suitable to donate. If in doubt, throw it out!

Sort your storage – baskets and hampers are great for toys, electrical leads and dress-ups. Archive boxes in new-season colours can look fresh while hiding a multitude of filing sins. And muffin trays or cutlery dividers work a treat in the home office, perfect for storing paperclips, tape, staples and all the odds and ends that never seem to have a home. (Check out the September issue of haven for inspo on beautiful storage at home.)

TOP TIPS:

  • Don’t create ‘maybe’ piles – you’re just relocating your clutter. And an organised pile of clutter is still clutter!
  • A written daily ‘to-do’ list will keep you on track and stop the constant chatter of deadlines and reminders in your head. A clear mind is a calm mind. And who doesn’t want some of that?
  • Storage can be beautiful. And fun. Re-purpose existing boxes, trays or baskets, make a display of the kids’ art, or hang hats, bags (or even bikes!) on cool hooks for an instant wall display.

Spring Fling? We’re in! Let’s get sorted.
