For the next two weeks the 2021 Gold Coast Film Festival will host flicks and fun around the Coast and we’ve rounded up the events we’re most looking forward to. Whether it’s a family night out or a girly get-together, there’s something for every occasion at this year’s festival.

FAMILY FAVES

‘Dive Club’ world premiere
The Gold Coast Film Festival is welcoming the stars of the Queensland shot series Dive Club to the ‘blue’ carpet on Saturday, 17 April at HOTA Home of the Arts. This exciting World Premiere event is screening the first 3 episodes of the young adult series ahead of Channel Ten and Netflix. On the blue carpet this morning we have directors Rhiannon Bannenburg, Hayley. Macfarlane and Christine Luby, series creator Steve Jaggi and young stars of the series Mjiah Madden, Aubri Ibrag, Georgia-May Davis, Sana’a Shaik, Mercy Conwall and Josh Heuston.

‘Sun Children’ Queensland premiere
Winner of Best Youth Performance at the Venice Film Festival, ‘Sun Children’ is a visually stunning and enchanting film about children and education in Iran. Follow the story of 12-year-old Ali and his three friends, who work hard to survive and support their families, doing small jobs in a garage and committing petty crimes to make fast money. In a turn of events that seems miraculous, Ali is entrusted to find hidden treasure underground. He recruits his gang, but first, to gain access to the tunnel, the children must enrol at the Sun School, close to where the treasure is located.

Monday April 19 from 1pm, Wednesday April 21 from 2.30pm and Saturday April 24 April from 9.30am at HOTA.

Sky High Cinema
Gliding, flying, swooping, soaring! Fly high these April school holidays at the Gold Coast’s iconic sky-high location, SkyPoint, with films that celebrate the magic of flying, exploring our universe and feeling the wind beneath your wings. Over two weekends, enjoy six family-friendly movies that will have the kids soaring with joy!

GIRLS’ NIGHT

QT Bites: Eat the Screen
Eat the screen, QT’s ultimate sensory dining experience, will send your tastebuds wild. Relax with a drink and start with a film on Japanese cuisine while enjoying dishes prepared by Yamagen’s award-winning chefs. Then, enjoy a selection of Mexican food and a short film on Mexico’s vibrant culinary cuisine. Celebrate film, indulge in food and drink and escape around the world with your senses with this curated food and film pairing, allowing you to taste the meals from the movie. The experience includes Japanese and Mexican food stations from Yamagen and Stingray, three drinks (Japanese cocktail, Sake and Margarita) and three short films celebrating Japanese and Mexican cuisine.

Rhapsody of Love
Romance, work and life all collide in this “Crazy Middle-class Asians” romantic comedy. ‘Rhapsody of Love’ follows the lives of four couples at different stages of their relationships: events planner Jess meets photographer Justin at the wedding of her best friend Ben; Ben and Natasha are perfect for each other, but can they both support each other’s career aspirations; then there’s Phil, always saying the wrong thing and looking for his next date. The first Asian Australian rom-com, Rhapsody of Love is a contemporary, modern love story.

Clueless on the Rooftop
It’s time to grab your bestie and celebrate like Cher and Dionne with a special pop-up screening of the teen cult classic that gave us tartan skirts and knee-high socks – Clueless. Relax into your beanbag, drink in hand, as the sun goes down and watch the best movie of the 90’s under the stars, set against the city lights at this secret rooftop cinema at Australia Fair. Ticket holders must meet at the newly refurbished Hotel Pacific, Australia Fair by 6.30pm to be escorted to the secret rooftop location. Come early and enjoy dinner at Hotel Pacific from 5pm before the event. You can even pre-order a cheese box to pick up on the night!
