If you’re wondering whether a mum is having a busy week, just look at her hair (#messybunlife). But we don’t need to neglect our tresses to save time, as Kelly Coates from TONI&GUY Broadbeach explains.
With 28 years in the hair business and six years in the parenting business – she’s mum to Skyla, 6, and Bodhi, 4 – Kelly is all about saving time (and looking good while you do it). Kelly knows the struggle as much as the next busy working mum, but she’s on a mission to prove that great hair doesn’t have to cost you time.
Invest in a good haircut
“Having a decent haircut with the right amount of weight removed in the right areas will make your life so much easier,” says Kelly. “It’s really important you discuss how you will be wearing your hair on a day-to-day basis with your stylist, so that they can make your cut work for you.”
For example, if you hair has been cut to be worn straightened, but all you can manage at home is a basic scrunch and go, you’re not going to get the most out of your style, says Kelly.
We know what you’re thinking – dirty hair is the key to a great look?! But this isn’t necessarily the case.
“These days, the formulations of professional shampoos and conditioners are so advanced that most hair types should only need to be shampooed two to three times a week,” says Kelly. “Think about it: if you shampoo twice as often as you should, your colour is going to last half as long, which equals more salon visits – or, your hair looking average for the last month or so before your next appointment.”
If you find that your hair needs to be washed more often than two to three times per week, chances are, there is a better product out there for you.
Products are your friends
“We all have friends that can chuck their hair up in a bun or ponytail and somehow make it look like an editorial from Vogue, while the rest of us look like we are ready for bed,” says Kelly. “More often than not, this comes down to using the right products in the right way, to properly prepare your hair for the style you’re looking for.”
There are lots of quick and easy methods and products that can help you get the look you want, depending on your hair type, and can even help extend your hair for another day, Kelly says.
“Just like you wouldn’t self-diagnose medication for yourself, it’s a good idea to chat to a hair professional to find out what’s right for you. It’s an easy way to save money and frustration (and ultimately, time!) in the long run.”
