What better way to celebrate the start of the festive season and the return of summer than with a soiree?! Make it memorable with these easy tips.
You don’t need much space to host a great party – you just need to know how to use it. It goes without saying that smaller spaces call for shorter guest lists, which is fine. ‘The more the merrier’ isn’t always true! If you’re hosting your shindig at home, establish the designated party zones and focus your attention there. Every party should have: space to stand, space to sit, space to eat and space to… uh, use the bathroom. If you’re hosting an intimate dinner party, set up sitting space elsewhere for casual convos and after dinner drinks. A chill backyard barbeque, on the other hand, should still have enough tables and chairs for every guest to eat at. And don’t forget to spruce up the loo!
Of course, you could take your party to a local park or the beach instead. The same rules apply here so make sure you’ve got enough shade and chairs and are in reasonable proximity to a bathroom for extra comfort.
Now for the fun part. Summer is all about feeling light and bright, so channel those vibes when choosing your decorations. Lucky for us, that undone, rustic look is still very much in so you can get away with homemade flower bouquets and mismatched crockery – in fact, you’ll be bang on trend. If you’re not sure where to start, set up your biggest pieces first. This could be tables, bench seating, rugs and cushions for the ground or umbrellas and cabanas if you’re outside. Match your smaller decor pieces (flowers, napkins, crockery, cutlery) with the colours of these big items and you’re almost there.

No party is complete without party games, and you can go as big or as little (literally) as you like. From Finska to giant Jenga, there are so many fun backyard games that will keep the kids and the ‘kids at heart’ entertained for hours. We’ve listed our favourites right here. For something a little more low key, there are plenty of great tabletop games out there. Ridley’s is the name behind those cute patterned trivia boxes you’ve probably seen around – they have trivia for just about everything. Of course, there are countless free games you can play, too! Charades, ‘Never have I ever’ and ‘Most likely to…’ are just a few favourites.
There are plenty of low cost, low effort ways to cater a get-together. You could have your friends bring a plate each, or chip in for a caterer. Or, you could take on the task of cooking yourself – here are three recipes that make it easy.
