As we head into summer and the Silly Season, a healthy, glowing tan may just be your best accessory. But how can you make the most of your spray tan appointment? It’s all in the planning.
Tans take anywhere from 24 to 48 hours to completely develop, so scheduling your appointment two days before your event is ideal. If it’s a really special event, it’s always a good idea to get a trial tan so you know what to expect.
Make sure you thoroughly exfoliate before your appointment, so you’ve got a nice fresh canvas (this will ensure an even result and make your tan last longer) and don’t wear any deodorant or moisturiser. Think about what you would like to get tanned in before you arrive, remembering that whatever you wear will leave a mark (just like sunbaking!). Your salon will likely supply a disposable G-string, but you may want to wear your own undergarments instead; togs, bikini bottoms, your own G-string or briefs are all totally fine. Make sure you bring loose, dark clothing to wear home, too.
After your spray tan has been applied, listen carefully to your therapist’s care instructions. Shower at the agreed time and don’t do any heavy exercise or sweating for 24 hours after your spray tan – you should avoid long, hot baths for the duration of your spray tan, too. Keep your skin well hydrated using a good quality moisturiser and tan extender, particularly if you’re swimming in pools or the ocean.
If you fall victim to a tanning mishap – maybe you left it on too long, or you’ve gone too dark? – get in the shower ASAP. Definitely do not try to exfoliate your tan off; you’ll still end up too dark, but you’ll also be patchy. To avoid disaster, it’s always best that you set an alarm and jump in the shower at the agreed time.
